This, dolls, is my most prized possession. It was my grandfather's chalkboard. He was a professor and had this chalkboard made sometime in the 50s? and it traveled with him and my grandmother from house to house.
As you can see, the thing is massive- more than 6 feet across! The only wall we had that accommodates it is in our main staircase/hallway. So it doesn't get much use as an actual chalkboard. For the two years we have been living here, it has been a 'display' for some vintage postcards of Manhattan Beach that my husband collects. But in actuality those cards are just sitting there, collecting dust. So I thought I would try an make the display a little more inviting, and here is what I came up with:
Looks much better, right? I used different colored twine, and wasabi tape to hang the postcards along the chalkboard. Now it looks like we purposefully displayed our collection, instead of just throwing them on the shelf.
With my eyes closed I picked each color of twine out of a bag, and did the same thing with the tape, so it didn't look too matchy-matchy. I have a bad habit of making everything match and I didn't want that for this display.
Then I used the tape to attach the twine to the back of the postcard, and then again to the chalkboard!
Now, I understand that most people don't have a 6 foot chalkboard in their home to reproduce this look. But I think this could look fantastic on a large mirror, or using a large picture frame. You could even just randomly hang things on a wall using the twine and wasabi tape! I think this could also be an interesting way to hang vintage photographs along a hallway because the black and white of the photographs would go so well with the color of the twine and tape. What do you kittens think?

Congrats! How exciting! You'll have to tell me which month your house will be in so I can go out and buy it. The chalkboard is so awesome especially since it belonged to your grandfather.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea which issue. Heck, I have no idea if it is a guarantee that my home will even make the cut. But cross your fingers it makes it and I will be sure to announce it on the blog. And facebook. And twitter. And shout it from the rooftops. LOL!
DeleteWhat a great piece..... even more so since it has a family history!
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents' house burned down when my mom was around 16, so I don't have any of her old toys or other mementos. The chalkboard was purchased right after the fire, so it is one of the few oldest items my grandparents owned.
DeleteI love this idea ! Brilliant !
ReplyDeleteThanks doll!
DeleteI love the idea of closing your eyes while picking out twine and tape! I'm a graphic designer so I tend to overthink things like that.
ReplyDeleteI also tend to overthink things as well, hence why sometimes I just leave it up to chance.
